Roll Bounce

I had this brilliant idea.

We should go rollerskating! I said to my friends. It will be fun! And funny! And so it came to pass that last Friday we ventured over to the east side to Skate Country (The No. 1 and Only Roller Skating Rink in Tucson) for some wholesome family fun.

Yeah.

First, can we say ghetto? There was a TPD officer stationed outside. Sometimes he'd come inside, too. I guess you never know what kind of shenanigans might go down at the skating rink on a Friday night. Second, the kids. Ohhh, the kids. I knew as I was sitting in the parking lot waiting for the others to arrive that it was basically going to be my worst nightmare. Kid after kid after kid being dropped off- dropped off! Masses of unsupervised pre-teens. Is there anything worse? I think not, friends, I think not.

My other fear was that I would have completely lost the ability to rollerskate. Roller skate. I don't know if that is one word or two so I'm just going to switch back and forth all willy-nilly to cover myself. Ha. That's how I roll. Get it? Roll? Roller Skate? I'm so punny. Anyway, good news on the skating front- I remembered how! I could totally do it! I am not, as previously discussed, athletic in any sense of the word. But I could still roller skate without dying and that is awesome.

It turns out that it was totally fun! I mean, those little kids were whipping by me right and left and I was in constant fear that if anyone slowed down or crashed or swerved in front of me I'd be forced to plow over them as I did not retain my ability to use the front brake. Toe brake? Toe stop? I don't know what it's called. I had to rely on the tried-and-true method of braking- slamming into the wall. Fortunately everyone had the courtesy to not get in my way and I didn't have to maim any innocent bystanders. So that part was good.

We were definitely among the oldest people there sans children. There were a couple of older guys who appeared to be there alone, just skating around, being weird, and I definitely think we were less creepy than that. At one point they were having races and they'd call out the age group that was able to go and after the 15-17 kids they were all, "Moms & Dads, Aunts & Uncles, it's your turn" as if there was no possible way anyone over the age of 18 would be there unless they'd brought some kind of a kid along. Oh well.

In conclusion, (haha, did you ever write papers like that in school? I think only the dumb kids actually started their conclusion paragraph by saying "in conclusion". If you did that, well...) rollerskating is awesome and fun. It is possibly good exercise, only it doesn't feel like exercise. I want to get myself some white skates with pink wheels, not unlike what I had when I was 12, and skate around my neighborhood with my iPod. And by iPod, I mean Walkman, clearly. And I don't care if people think I look like a fool (Who are we kidding, of course I care) because I will be having so much fun. Okay, I probably won't do that, but I kind of want to. I definitely want to.

The End.

Oooh, I have lots of comments. First, you should see if that rink has an adult skate night. Most of the ones here do and that is way better.

Second, you should be careful because my friend broke her arm last year while roller skating because some dude cut her off and she fell.

Third, I have white roller skates but the wheels are yellow. I'm going to replace them with pink because that is way better. I should start roller skating again to see if I can get back some of my mad skillz.

They do have adult skate night but it's on Thursdays and no one can go out on Thursdays, because we are boring grownups with jobs.

I am not afraid of breaking my arm. That's the risk you have to take to be awesome.

Wait, what? You own roller skates? Why? And why didn't you mention that when I originally told you about roller skating?

I don't know. They are here. My friend gave them to me. I have old roller skates in CV, but they're a size 7 or something. But they are white with pink wheels.

I think that is quite adventurous. I have two comments . . . one - your cousin shares the EXACT same feeling about pre-teen night and we have had that same conversation many times about movie theaters on weekends - he hates all the kids thus no movies for us :( Can't you both just enjoy yourselves without dwelling on the people around you?? Two - this entire blog gave me anxiety. I have never been able to roller skate and after trying for years so that I could fit in at roller skate night, I finally had to give it up and realize that I am totally incapable. What is wrong with me?? Who knows? Some day Davis is going to want to roller skate or ice skate and the terror will return.
